Nikon D700-IR and Zeiss ZF 25/2.8 IR Distagon

Diglloyd is one of sources to learn infrared, and yesterday they got the converted Nikon D700 full-spectrum camera ( sensor glass is replace to pass visible light, infrared, and UV ) and Zeiss ZF-IR 25/2.8 Distagon, then they combined those gears together. Above are two examples shot from Nikon D700-IR with Zeiss ZF 25/2.8 IR Distagon. [ Source diglloyd ]

I am not sure I get the idea of converting a DSLR with a glass filter. Once you put an IR filter on the front then ok your exposure times are not crazy but you still can’t use it like an SLR and look through the viewfinder. I know modern cameras like the D700 have live-view but the way Nikon implement it is very frustrating to use and is nothing like a compact.
The Canon LV system is much better and does feel like a compact (keeping the mirror up between shots. I used to have a Canon 40D (although I am a Nikon fan), converted to 720nm. It could be used with a more agressive 850nm filter on the lens with live view and it was a nice trade-off but nowhere near as nice as using it the way it should be. Don’t get me wrong, live view is useful but my advise is not to rely on it, get the camera converted to IR properly.
