For overall winner dpreview recommended Lumix LZ8.
Even the style is quite conservative but Panasonic Lumix LZ8 has extensive feature set and comprehensive manual controls, and as the winner at dpreview budget camera group test, it is the best value for money, and one of the best performers too.
The Panasonic LZ8 isn’t the smallest or prettiest camera here, but it is undoubtedly the best camera here and is actually very well put together and is a lot less bulky than it appears. You can buy it online for around $99 – $120, which in our book makes it an absolute bargain.

SLR Gear reviewed the Panasonic 14-45mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 OIS lens that also ships with the G1 as its kit lens. On testing the lens, the reviewer found the images to be sharp especially in wide-angle settings. The lens did produce some negligible chromatic aberration and the reviewer also noticed a small amount of barrel distortion at all focal lengths.

Searching for “perfect” compact, is like walking in the alley which never end.
60Hz Productions has compared Panasonic LX3 and Canon G10. There are quite a few image samples comparing the performance of the two cameras, and 60Hz did great analyze with both cameras.
