New Canon EOS Rebel XS 1000D or Used Nikon D80?

After Photokina and PMA, the digital camera battle has yet to stop. It will continue over time, and there are a number of things that you have to consider before getting your next digital camera. From prices to features, to gears which will match your camera and usage, you really need to do some homework before you decide which camera to purchase.
If you’re looking at spending around $400-500 for a dSLR, Steve’s Digicam Forums has a good discussion about choosing either a brand new Canon EOS Rebel XS D1000, tagged at $550, or a used Nikon D80 for $400 (used since oct 2007 ). For me personally, buying a used digital camera comes with a number of risks, so I think I would settle with the new EOS, but what about you?

If pretty much everything has a 2 year warranty, like we do here, in Estonia, then the Nikon should have quite a few months warranty left. Even without, I’d probably still buy the D80.
To correct how the part reads about me not touching another camera that compares…..the emphasis was COMPARES. I have picked up the Canon XT, XTI, XSI. I have also used played with a D40 and D60. However, I have not messed with the D80 which has the same sensor by Sony in it. But it does not include image stabilization.
The Nikon D80 does seem impressive and I guess if one didn’t look toward Sony and had to decide on either the Canon or the Nikon…I would choose the Nikon….it kind of also boils down to what lens or lenses your friend is willing to give up with the camera because if any at all since finding deals like this from a simple google.
I probably would go with neither and get the Sony a200. I may be a little biased but I did a ton of research before buying. The features packed into the a200 for the price really does just blow away the competition. You probably won’t find the deal that I found this January but I got the Sony a200 with the 18-70mm lens, 75-300 lens, 2GB Card, & a sling bag for it all for $549. It really is a great camera for jumping into the DSLR world.
People always say well a bunch about the how many lenses are available but really, there are plenty. This is especially true because when entering the ENTRY LEVEL DSLR field, one should focus on shooting good shots and learning to use their camera appropriately, not buying up every lens in site to make their pictures look better because that simply won’t work. It’s who’s behind the lens, not the lens itself. Anyways, Sony bought Minolta and uses the same A mount so you can use all the minolta lenses. Another thing to think about is that the image stabilization is in the camera and therefore saving you on having to get it in the lens, so using old lenses from many years back meant for old film SLR cameras still look amazing. This feature works really well too.
I love that my camera can go from 100-3200 ISO. Although, I like to stick to around 100-400 for most of my shots, its comforting to know that if needed I can visit those levels here and there (which I have).
One final thing, I might add is that the controls are so perfect on this camera. You don’t really have to think much to set your settings. For the most part I didn’t even need to look at the manual. I had read so much about the camera maybe I was ready for the controls. But everything is in a VERY natural place. This camera just makes sense. I haven’t touched another camera that compares to this in the same price range. Nikon appears to be the way to go for the PRO stuff. But I may even stick with Sony when I move up to better gear, and get the a900 just based on my experience thus far.
I hope this helps and someone can relay the message because I really just don’t feel like joining another forum to tell the person mulling the option over. If someone here is a member of that forum please let them know. I would be interested to see if they check it out and what they think.
